Disclosure: Happy Pride Month, Black Music History Month, and Caribbean American Heritage Month. If you are easily trigged, annoyed, or bothered please stop reading. To my returning readers, thank you for your continued support and understanding.
As we continue to celebrate Pride Month Black Music History Month, and Caribbean Music Month in June, the BET Awards theme for 2022 was Culture's Biggest Night. Though I enjoyed the show overall, I saw some moments that made me pause and think this does fit into the element of #BlackExcellence nor does it help the community moving forward.
The first pause began with Lil Nas X's absence. I enjoyed his performance last year as it reminds me of Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time" and he made his statement like previous artists in the past that made headlines the next day. How could we forget the kiss around the world with Madonna, Brittney Spears, and Christina Aguileria. It was the highlight of the 2003 VMAs, which also featured Missy Elliott the theme was "The Wedding Chappel," so Lil Nas X kissing one of his dancers did not bother me. A few months later during the VMAs Normani and Teyana Taylor gave a risque performance that also did not bother art is in the eye of the beholder, and as a viewer, the point is to the performance is to make it memorable for years to come.
Lil Nas X's debut album Montero went platinum last year, in addition, Former POTUS President Barack Obama released his annual playlist, with Lil Nas X Montero (Call Me By Your Name) among other artists including Spice, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Nas, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Allison Russell. Earlier this year Lil Nas X was up for five nominations including Best Music Video, Best Melodic Rap Performance, Recond of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. Montero debuted at number 2 with 126,000 albums and 147 million in streaming sold overall. The question becomes with all of the accolades of his debut album, I genuinely thought he would have received at least two or three nominations.
As the announcement for the BET Awards 2022 nominations came to pass, Lil Nas X and many individuals pointed out the fact that BET seemingly left out Lil Nas X, who had a successful year and album overall. As the mounting backlash was coming BET released a statement in part, "... We proudly showcased his extraordinary talent and creativity on the show twice. ... Nominations are decided by a voting academy of esteemed media professionals none of which are BET employees."
Lil Nas X recently spoke out against BET stating part, "My relationship with BET has been painful and strained for quite some time. .... They let me perform on their show last year after assurances that I wasn't a satanist or devil worshiper and my performance would be appropriate for their audience." In addition to releasing additional statements, Lil Nas X has released a new record with NBA Young Boy called Late to DA Party (F$%# BET) which currently has an estimated 5.9 million views and counting.
This is not the first time that BET-Viacom has found itself surrounding itself with controversy regarding the LGBTQIA+ community and the BET Awards. A few years ago media personality B.Scott had to file a lawsuit against BET for approximately $2.5 million citing discrimination after the network allegedly forced B.Scott to change from his original outfit into men's clothing. Once again the viewers called out the network and issued a statement in part, "... a miscommunication." A few years later B. Scott and BET-Viacom reached a settlement the amount was not disclosed at the time of the settlement or announcement. In part a statement was released by B.Scott in part, "... I can say a settlement has been reached and the matter is resolved." We must remain on one accord. We continuously tell people that not Black People are monolithic, so let us practice what we preach by appreciating our individuality and supporting each other once we show up.
"As long as there have been Black people, there have been Black LGBTQ and same-gender-loving people."-Dr. David Johns
